Persons with Disabilities

The Persons with Disabilities Subcommittee aims at a society where there is no discrimination against physical/mental disabilities and where human rights and specific rights of persons with disabilities are actually guaranteed. Accordingly, the Subcommittee endeavors to find ways to guarantee such rights and improve laws and systems under the current legal system including the Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination of Disabled Persons, Remedy against Infringement of Their Rights, etc. The Subcommittee also provides various supports to rescue disabled persons who suffer the violation of human rights. According to the basic directions, the Subcommittee members conduct lawsuits (including planned lawsuit to improve system and lawsuit to support victim) and advise on issues of violation of human rights at the request of National Human Rights Commission, etc.

The Subcommittee conducts researches on protection of human rights of persons with disabilities and holds seminars. Researches currently under way include: a research to improve web access by persons with disabilities and a research about the obligatory employment of visually impaired persons as masseurs in the public sector. The results of these researches will be released later. The Subcommittee also has a program for visiting organizations related to people with disabilities.

The Subcommittee interacts with various organizations and people of all levels of society to understand actual demands in the field. The Subcommittee signed an MOU with the National Human Rights Commission and the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled, and has provided legal support to them. Sharing pending issues with Research Institute of the Differently Abled Person’s Right in Korea, the Subcommittee seeks to find ways to improve systems for human rights protection of the disabled and ways to save victims.
